Climbing The Thumb

Liberty Mountain Employee, Todd Cordery shares his thoughts after taking a lap up The Thumb with a fellow coworker, Nathan Smith.

I recently went on a little climbing adventure with Nathan Smith. We went to a place called The Thumb. The Thumb is a long and fun climb that consists of nine pitches of old school granite climbing. The first few pitches were enjoyable and pretty easy. I have never climbed trad before let alone multi-pitch trad. It was very educational to see the way Nathan placed the trad gear. For being a sport climber, I put all my trust in the bolts that are for the most part pretty solid. Putting my trust in little pieces of trad gear that I didn’t even place was a chore in and of its self.

The Thumb is a classic, so they say. It definitely has some old-school characteristics. The most memorable feature was the little chimney that I had to shimmy my way up. I wasn’t used to that at all. In my opinion, the chimney's full-body workout made the 5.7 grade a little deceiving. Once I got passed the chimney it was blast.

An Amusement Park of Sandstone - The San Rafael Swell

Liberty Mountain employees, Jason Shumaker and Benjamin Eaton spent a weekend in the San Rafael Swell to enjoy some of dirty desert cracks and towers. Jason helps illustrate the elusiveness of the The Swell.

“I can’t find that route anywhere!” A climbing partner of mine was trying to locate some beta on a new and obscure route located in the San Rafael Swell, the nominated National Monument swath of land in Emery County, Utah. He had looked in books, online forums and spent evenings bending the ears of potential informers at the local climbing gym but he was coming up empty. He had heard of the mystery climb from a friend of a friend who vouched for its new classic status and that it was the new must do when visiting the area. That’s how it goes for most of the routes in the Swell; they live like urban legends on the edge of conversations around the campfire but you can never seem to trace them back to the source.

Santeria First Ascent - Scott Adamson

On January 3, 2013, Scott Adamson (31) from Provo, UT sent the first ascent of Santeria in Provo Canyon, making it the hardest mixed climb in Utah.

Scott Adamson hails from Provo, UT where he keeps himself busy establishing high-end mixed-ice climbs in Provo Canyon, as well as delicately sewing up the cracks in the deserts of Southern Utah.

Scott is mostly known around the nation and world for his epic attempts on the east face of Alaska’s Mooses Tooth and the southeast face of Kyzyl Asker in Kyrgyzstan. Obviously his real passion is on alpine and ice ascents, although he is still very keen on trad climbing and loves to dip into sport climbing and bouldering every once and a while.
