A Safer Rope – Beal Tiger 10mm Unicore

The Beal Tiger 10mm Unicore climbing rope was recently featured in the Climbing Magazine 2013 Spring Gear Guide. Praised for being the “Best In Class,” the gear testers and editors at Climbing Magazine loved the Tiger for its innovative rope protection from the use of Unicore; a method of permanently bonding the sheath of the rope to the core that eliminates sheath slippage. “I had no worries of this thing cutting and exposing the core if I blew it,” said one gear tester after using the Tiger on his climb up Tiger Balm Arete (5.11R) in Eldorado Canyon, CO.

The Beal Tiger 10mm UNICORE is a fluid and light dynamic rope that performs like a champ while sport climbing. It is a perfect choice for projecting routes on lead and for those looking to climb on a beefy but not bulky rope. The Tiger is easy to clip, nice to handle, and is compatible with all semi-automatic belay devices. For being a 10mm rope, the Beal Tiger 10mm UNICORE is competitively light and has an impressively low impact force. The Tiger is available with either of Beal’s industry-leading dry treatments: Dry Cover or Golden Dry.

Dry Cover: Each sheath filament of a Beal Dry Cover rope is treated with a water repellent chemical before the rope is manufactured. This chemical covering is polymerised at high temperature, making it last for the life of the rope. The durability of this treatment is given by the polymerisation, but also because of the individual treatment of each filament before the rope is made. A Dry Cover rope has its sheath treated before the rope is woven.

Key Benefits of Dry Cover
• Improved resistance to grit and to humidity
• Limited water absorption
• Improved rope-running through carabiners and belay devices
• Improved abrasion resistance in normal climbing use

Golden Dry: Every filament of the sheath and the core of a Beal Golden Dry rope is treated with a water repellent chemical before the rope is manufactured. This chemical covering is polymerised at high temperature, making it last for the life of the rope. The durability of this treatment is given by the polymerisation, but also because of the individual treatment of each filament before the rope is made. A Golden Dry rope has both its sheath and core treated before the rope is woven together.

Key Benefits of Golden Dry
• Drastically reduces weight gain in wet conditions
• Prevents the rope from becoming boated
• Improved rope-running through carabiners and belay devices
• Improved abrasion resistance in normal climbing use

Starting in 2013, the Tiger will join the prestigious line of UNICORE ropes. Beal’s UNICORE ropes are the industry’s only climbing ropes that use a technology that permanently bonds the rope’s sheath to its core, eliminating sheath slippage to create a much safer rope.

UNICORE is Beal’s astonishing new technology that binds a rope’s sheath to its core without affecting its performance, strength, stretch, and suppleness. The sheath of a UNICORE rope stays connected to the core, even when it’s cut; keeping the core covered and reinforced.  The sheath of a standard rope will slide down the core when cut, leaving the core overexposed and weak. UNICORE enhances the safety of a rope, even in extreme situations. This is possible due to the fact that UNICORE Eliminates sheath slippage – Allows for a safe escape if the sheath had been cut – Eliminates excessive fraying of the sheath when cutting the rope length with a knife sans melting the ends – Reduces rope shrinkage in water by more than 50%. UNICORE is a must have on ropes used in both dry and wet conditions. Dry treatments and water do not change the properties and performance of UNICORE.
