Avalanche Awareness For Ice Climbers

Ice climbers don't only need the knowledge to determine if the ice is safe enough to climb, they also need the skills that will keep them safe from avalanches. Along the approach or hiding high above the route, there might be an avalanche threat that could easily be avoided if you know how to identify the "red flags."

One of the best ways to learn those avy skills is to attend an avalanche clinic where you will be educated by trained professionals. Although many clinics are formatted for skiers and snowboarders, you can find an occasional clinic that is more catered to climbers and alpinists.

On February 10, 2016, in Sandy, UT, Liberty Mountain and the Utah Avalanche Center will host a FREE avalanche awareness clinic for ice climbers: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO.

Date: Wednesday, Feb 10, 2016
Time: 6 pm
Location: Momentum Climbing Gym - 220 W. 10600 S. Sandy, UT
Cost: Free

During the clinic you'll spend some time with Nathan Smith (author of the Beehive Ice climbing guide), participate in an ice-specific avy discussion, get your questions answered during the Q&A, and try your luck at winning some great gear from some amazing sponsors: Grivel, Cypher, Beal, Outdoor Designs, and Team Easy. Save the date on your calendar and make plans to attend. We look forward to seeing you there.

For those that can't attend, stay tuned for a future article that shares the basic principles that were taught and discussed during this clinic. Please subscribe to our email list and we'll deliver the article straight to your inbox. How nice is that?
