Liberty Mountain-Peregrine Outfitters Merger

Liberty Mountain and Peregrine Outfitters have signed an agreement for Liberty Mountain to acquire Peregrine and merge their distribution and fulfillment businesses. The transaction between these two long-time outdoor distributors is planned for completion in December 2011. Under the terms of the agreement, Liberty Mountain’s President, Gary Heward and his wife Diana, will be Owners of the newly combined Liberty Mountain/Peregrine Outfitters distribution organization and Gary will serve as President. Peregrine Outfitters’ President, Bob Olsen will continue as a consultant to the new combined entity.

The organization will operate under the Liberty Mountain name and will continue to use the Peregrine Outfitters, Riverstone and Peregrine brands that Peregrine Outfitters has built. Both organizations offer a wide assortment of products, and the newly merged group plans to not only support the different product lines currently represented, but expand on them.

“The new, combined Liberty Mountain/Peregrine Outfitters is being created to make it even easier for shops to order the widest selection of outdoor gear available anywhere”, states Heward. “We are confident that we will deliver the best that both organizations have to offer, to both our customers and suppliers”. Both organizations are well known for a great product selection, easy ordering and same day shipping of outdoor gear to shops throughout the United States. This business model will continue and be improved upon with this strategic combination.

Peregrine Outfitters has a long tradition of a great selection of products and services for the outdoor industry. Peregrine President Bob Olsen is proud of the organization he has created over so many years and wanted to find a way to build on his past efforts. According to Olsen, “We have respected Liberty Mountain as a tough competitor for many years. Both companies have worked hard to maintain high standards of performance, especially in the area of customer service. I have full confidence that they will build on Peregrine’s foundation and offer customers the same level of service that we have always given. Liberty Mountain will continue to sell Vaude, Outdoor Designs, Trangia, Olicamp, Stram, Equinox and all other exclusive brands that each of the organizations currently distributes; an offering of nearly 800 brands and 15,000 non-exclusive items. These items/brands will be featured in the currently-in-production 2012 Liberty Mountain “Everything for the Outdoors” catalog that is widely used by outdoor shops throughout the United States.

In addition, Liberty Mountain will see no change in the exclusive Climbing Distribution it offers throughout North America, including Grivel, Edelweiss, Beal, Pieps, Singing Rock, Cypher, Stubai, Valandré and Kong. These key brands will continue to have their own catalog and be offered to the best technical shops.

The Liberty Mountain/Peregrine Outfitters distribution organization plans to continue to operate warehouses in both Salt Lake City, Utah and Montoursville, Pennsylvania for the foreseeable future. Shipping to Peregrine Outfitters customers should be completely moved over to the Salt Lake City and Montoursville warehouses by December 12th. Liberty Mountain has agreements to increase its space in both locations in the immediate future.

The newly merged Liberty Mountain and Peregrine Outfitters plan to exhibit at the upcoming Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City January 19-22 (Booth # 13013). Everyone is invited to visit the booth to find out more about the exciting plans for the future.

The Black Streak 5.10b - Albion Basin, Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah

While temps in Salt Lake are in the 90's, high above the valley I'm freezing as I belay my partner Tom on the first pitch of the Black Streak, 5.10b. It's 3:00 in the afternoon in the middle of August, but I'm tucked away between an 800' limestone wall and a icy bergschrund. Intermittently little pieces of rock tumble down the wall hinting at Tom's progression on this alpine classic.

Located at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon in Albion Basin, the Devil's Castle formation looms dark above a colorful mix of lush greenery and wildflowers. Taking the prominent black streak close to the center of the formation, the Black Streak takes a mostly straight line up through a mix of great to horribly bad limestone. Rising 800' feet from the continually growing talus field at the base, the route has everything from techy slab sections to steep pocket pulling and eventually tops out on the ridge line not far from the summit. The crumbly rock combined with spontaneous or goat fueled rock fall and the elevation gives it a feeling of being "out there" although you are only a 40 minute drive from downtown Salt Lake City.

As we climb we pass hanging gardens of ferns, columbine, Parry's Primrose and many other flowers I cannot name. Although the guide recommended bringing a full rack to supplement the bolts, we rarely placed any additional gear, instead preferring to just keep moving.

After a few hours from leaving the car we reached a large ledge one pitch from the ridge. Smelling strongly of goat piss I was more than happy I had drawn the final pitch leaving Tom to enjoy the pungent odors below. All too soon I was on the summit ridge belaying Tom to the top, both of us wishing for more pitches but still psyched to enjoy the beautiful scenery on the trail back down.

After a leg pounding descent through loose talus we finally reached the treeline and hiked through a natural flower garden. At it's peak, the wildflower display in Albion Basin is one of the most beautiful sights I've seen anywhere. Fields of flowers are in every direction with blooms of every hue blending together and competing with one another for visual attention. The buzz of bees is all you can hear in some areas while others the sound of water gurgling through a narrow brook seems to be speaking in a language that I cannot grasp.

It seems that ever few minutes we stop to look at something or another and I realize that as much as the climbing was the impetus for being out here today, this is really why I am here. Although we usually focus on the climb itself or it's rating, sometimes the journey is more important than the destination.

City of Rocks - Morning Glory Spire and the Anteater

I woke up to a view that overloaded my senses. In every direction, hundreds of white granite monoliths protruded out of the green sagebrush with the bright blue-sky painting a backdrop. The colors were so vivid that I could close my eyes and still see the outlined image on the rocks burned into my memory. We were in the City of Rocks in Idaho, and any climber that has ever been there knows that it’s like a Disneyland of climbing destinations. There is something for everyone there. Whether you climb 5.5’s or 5.14’s, you will find something that will make you say, “That was such a classic route”. I think that phrase may have been uttered on almost every climb we did.

Last weekend, I went to the City with some other folks from Liberty Mountain, including our Climbing Buyer, Jake and Marketing Director, Nathan, along with their friend Tom, who is a previous Liberty employee. We left early on a Saturday morning and arrived just in time for the heat to set in. We spent Saturday driving from spot to spot and climbing anything and everything we could.

I did quite a few pumpy sport routes that were challenging and fun, then I ended the day Saturday climbing a really run out route called “Swiss Cheese” 5.7 R. Featuring only 2 bolts and one decent piece of protection in its 70 feet. Right after that I hopped on “Scream Cheese” 5.9 a fun route just to the right of Swiss Cheese. There was no better feeling that night than resting my sore muscles in my hammock, looking at the stars and knowing that I had another day ahead of me in the City.

The next day we drove all over the City, hitting crag after crag, but the highlight of my trip was climbing a 5.8 trad route called Skyline.

Rising out of the sagebrush stands a massive monolith called “Morning Glory Spire”, that has a beautiful crack running up the side of it. It is ideal for anyone that enjoys an amazing view, and wants to practice plugging in gear. With Nathan on belay, I began climbing up the spire. The very first section I traversed to the left using a killer undercling, and moved onto the crux.

I was pretty hesitant at first but once I got two pieces of pro in the rock, I gained the confidence boost to keep going. The rest of the climb was so fun and picturesque, that I wanted to forget about placing gear and keep going. Once I clipped into the chains I leaned back and took in all the scenery.

Among the backdrop of the City, I could see Jake climbing a route on an adjacent wall from me, and could see the vultures in the far off distance soaring on thermals of warm rising air. Skyline was the perfect climb to end a perfect weekend in the city. I cannot wait to go back and jump on some new routes. The City of Rocks will forever be one of my favorite and most beautiful climbing destinations.

June 8, 2011 — Singing Rock has announced a preventative recall of the Singing Rock harnesses, Crux, Nara and Nemo. There are less than 95 of these harnesses remaining in the hands of US consumers after the recovery efforts of Liberty Mountain, the US Distributor of Singing Rock.

The defect, which can potentially cause a weakened waist belt, was identified during regular internal quality inspections. Up to now there are no reports of problems from users.

As of yet there are no reports of this defect coming from normal use. Nonetheless, Liberty Mountain and Singing Rock are acting pro-actively in this matter given the potential casualty hazard. Singing Rock has immediately changed the construction of the stitching for the CRUX and made other construction changes to the NARA and NEMO to avoid possible safety hazards.

Since word of this recall reached Liberty Mountain, we have enacted our internal recall protocol and have contacted every customer who has purchased any of these three harnesses. At this time we have been able to account for all but 95 harnesses affected by this recall.

PLEASE RETURN THESE HARNESSES FOR REPLACEMENT WITH A NEW HARNESS.

June Climbing Night

Each month we try to get as many employees out on the rock as possible to ensure that everyone from our accountants to the warehouse pickers to the receptionists know our gear. The weather in Salt Lake had stymied earlier attempts but yesterday we were finally able to make it happen.

We had a great group in Little Cottonwood Canyon at the Schoolroom Wall on the Gate Buttress.

Redstone Winterfest 2011

We just returned from the 2011 Redstone Winterfest, a longstanding event with snowshoe races, nordic skiing, snow sculpture, doggy parades and for the last two years, ice climbing. Despite warmer temps, many of the area's ice and mixed routes were in great shape. Thanks to the town of Redstone and Rock and Ice for hosting this event.

Starting in spring 2010, Liberty Mountain will offer Beal’s line of climbing ropes and other climbing and mountaineering equipment. Since its origin in Vienne, France in 1976, Beal has become one of the world’s premier manufacturers of climbing and industrial ropes. Beal has been a leader in the introduction of new ideas and innovation to climbing ropes, including recently its Uni-core technology and also PROGRAM feature which makes the rope more supple and flexible on the ends where knots are tied.

Advanced Training for Avalanche Beacons

You are cordially invited to attend an advanced beacon training seminar brought to you by Pieps Avalanche Beacons and LibertyMountain. These seminars will help you to better understand yourpersonal beacon and it will also educate you on the advancements of avalanche beacons over the past few years. These clinics will beroughly three hour training and education sessions. Pizza and refreshments will be provided for both clinics. Coffee and bagels will be provided at the morning clinic. Please bring your favorite beacon and appropriate clothing for cold weather. We are limiting attendance to 20 individuals per session so please RSVP as soon as possible.

Part of what makes backcountry skiing so interesting is you never know exactly what to expect. Snow and the weather that sculpts it are remarkably dynamic. Just when you think you have it figured out it will throw you for a loop. Weather forecasts, advice from friends, and personal experience can give you a faint idea of what you may encounter on your tour but ultimately you must commit and accept the unknown.

The first snowstorm of the season was forecasted to hit the Wasatch on September 30. The forecasters gave no estimate of how much would fall in the upper Cottonwood Canyons so we were left to watch the rain in the valley and guess if there would be enough snow at Alta on the morning of October 1. Why get up at 5 a.m. and drive to the mountain when you aren’t even sure it will be skiable? One reason is we learn the most when we take risks.

We arrived at Alta to find just under a foot of snow- not bad for an early season storm but the coverage seemed barely adequate. Would it be worth hiking to the upper mountain only to find it impossible to safely ride down? It was worth a shot. As it turned out, the snow was dense enough to keep our boards on top (mostly) and the riding was quite fun! Seeing the golden aspens mixed with snow added to a very satisfying morning.
